Bye-bye hair fall!

Tired of seeing the drain clogged with your hair? Or strands of hair on your pillow when you wake up? On an average, we lose 100 strands of hair a day. Hair growth follows a pattern—the growth phase (anagen), the transition phase (catagen) and shedding phase (telogen). During anagen, the hair fibres are anchored to the hair follicle, but this is not the case during telogen and it is in this phase that the hair tends to fall. According to Delhi-based dermatologist, Dr Vandana Chatrath, “About 10 per cent of your hair is in the shedding phase at a time, so it is normal to lose between 50 to 100 strands a day. Anymore than that could be a cause of concern.”

Don’t lose hair
Dr Chatrath lists the major causes of hair fall as stress, improper diet, seasonal changes, hormone changes, deficiencies like low iron levels, surgeries, illnesses, pregnancy and certain medications. Here are a few tips to contain hair fall.

1 Eat smart:
Hair is made up of protein, so it is important to increase your intake of meat, fish, pulses, eggs, vegetables and fruits. Avoid crash-diets. Adequate sleep and water is a must.

2 Take time out:
Excessive stress is conclusively known to slow down hair growth and cause hair loss. The body reacts to stress by producing more free radicals that cause damage and, in some cases, hair falls out. Meditation and breathing exercises should help.

3 Stop hair abuse:
Harsh chemical treatments like perming, colouring and straightening also result in hair fall. Cut down the use of blow-dryers, tongs and styling products, as these can dry out the scalp and cause flakes.

4 Hair care products:
Seasonal changes also cause hair fall. Excessive exposure to the sun, pollution, rain and dust without proper protection makes the hair dry, brittle and limp. Use a leave-in conditioner during the rains to protect it from the humidity and wash and oil your hair regularly to maintain a healthy scalp. Stick to one good mild cleansing shampoo and conditioner for at least six months before changing.

Massaging your scalp stimulates circulation and keeps hair follicles active. Hair serum forms a thin protective layer and returns the moisture lost due to environmental factors and heat-induced styling.

How to prevent veiny hands

Both Sarah Jessica Parker and Madonna have them. No matter how smooth your face, veiny hands will always betray a woman’s age. Our hands tend to age faster than our faces because the skin on the back of the hand is much thinner than that on the face. So when even a small amount of collagen begins to break down due to ageing it’s going to have a noticeable impact on our hands. Here’s how you can turn back the clock.

Moisturise
There are several creams available that appear to promote new collagen formation. A study, published in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in 2007, reported that 83 per cent of women between ages 35 and 65 who tried creams containing growth factors like collagen found improvement in their hand wrinkles. But if you want to stay away from pricey products, just moisturise. While a moisturiser won’t create new collagen, it can leave skin looking plumper and more youthful.

Apply sunscreen
One more key to keeping hands looking young is to avoid direct sunlight. The next best thing is to coat your hands with a good sunscreen several times a day.

Wax your hands
Give your hands a heated paraffin wax bath. It can be very useful for deep moisturising. Wax coats the skin, offering a form of protection you don’t ordinarily get from a cream.

The Art of Make-Up, Brace Yourself!

I have always been interested in make-up and intrigued with the wide range of products available in the marketplace!  My younger teen years saw me running around with deep blue eyeliner ringed around my eyes, peachy pink cheeks and rosebud lips… all of which, somehow, felt very hip and trendy in the 80’s. However, with real life taking over, with a professional career to manage, a manic household to run and a continued sense of total bafflement on what products to buy, what tools to use to apply them and where to just start the entire process I have stuck to my basic (now) black eyeliner, mascara, foundation and powder for over 2 decades!
Until, that is, I was exposed to the world of MissMalini and those around her, who with a few magic strokes seem to transform the ordinary into a most extraordinary look. Keen on investigating this further, I managed to book a sitting with Sunita Brace, a make-up artist with a great sense of realism and many pragmatic tips to share.
That one hour has already transformed my life. I knew upfront that I could and would never spend hours in the front of the mirror, preening myself, and yet I wanted to walk out of the house with striking eyes, stunning contours and highlights bouncing off my face! I still haven’t quite mastered the technique of “placing” the eyeliner gel, and still have to fight the temptation of trying to “draw” amazing sleek, thin lines across a rather bumpy canvas… but it’s a battle I am determined to win.
So how does one transform into a beauty queen in all of 10 minutes? Sunita had a few simple but great tips for me!

1. Keep it simple – know your face and work with the positives,
2. Take your time ‘between layers’ – if you are going to rush the process, and don’t ‘prime your skin’ you have lost the battle before you even begin the war!
3. Eyeshadows come in multiple colors – but for the quick fix glam look, you really need to only section your eye into 3 main areas and work the colors in accordingly.
4. Highlight the right bits – it’s amazing what some sheer highlighter in the arch of your eyebrow can do for your look!
5. Use the right tools – you don’t need an artist’s kit – all you need are a few basic brushes, clean fingers and a steady hand!
