New Novel

My Education by Susan Choi

My Education by Susan Choi
My Education by Susan Choi was such an intense and passionate read that I was hesitant to put the book down in order to feed myself and get some sleep.
Regina, our narrator, starts her first year of graduate school feeling very adult. After all, she’s no longer an undergrad. An English major, Regina is forewarned about Professor Nicholas Brodeur’s predilection for young coeds, but is drawn to his charisma the first time she sees him. So much that she signs up for an advanced English class that isn’t in her concentration of study.  Soon, she is drawn into the intricate web of Professor Brodeur’s life and his family. Regina is so entrenched in her belief that she is an “adult” that she cannot see how entangled she becomes into Brodeur’s family.
My Education is the first book I’ve read by Choi so I had no idea what to expect. Choi is an accomplished writer who has garnered many awards for her previous works, including being a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.  Clearly my expectations were high. Choi did not disappoint me.
While I had to look up my fair share of words in my dictionary app throughout the book, all the words Choi chose for her narrative had a purpose. I forced myself to slow down with this book because each sentence was chockful of emotion and motive. Regina thought carefully about her decisions and justified them in her mind. As the reader, I could see clearly that Regina’s choices were not the best ones for her, but I wanted it to all work out for Regina.
Choi captured young love and passion with the same depth and authority that she described a disillusioned and failing relationship. I won’t give much more details because I don’t want to spoil your discovery of Regina’s experiences.
I originally chose to read this book as part of my goal this year is to read more Asian American authors.  My Education is exactly the type of books I want to see more of. Regina is half Asian, but her Asianness does not define her character or her story. This is not an East meets West coming of age story and I applaud Susan Choi for that. Just because an author is Asian American means he or she should be compelled to write novels about his or her ethnic background.
I hope you’ll grab a copy ofMy Education by Susan Choi.

If you’re looking for a South American adventure, consider booking a trip to a 16th century Andean city known as the cradle of ancient pre-Incan history and recently named South America’s leading tourist destination by the world’s travel industry.

Quito, Ecuador captured the lofty
title at the World Travel Awards for South and Central America in Peru this month, just in time to fete its 35th anniversary as a UNESCO Heritage site -- one of the first capital cities in the world to be bestowed with the title.
Founded on the ruins of an Inca city and tucked between Andean volcanoes 2,850 m above sea level, the 16th century city of Quito is described as a freeze-frame in time, boasting the best-preserved historic center in Latin America.
Major landmarks include historic monasteries, churches, convents, and colonial plazas.
Quito snatched the title from other major cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Lima, Easter Island, and Buenos Aires.
Surrounding areas also boast some of the most biodiverse and geographically rich regions in the world, with snow-capped mountain peaks, tropical rainforests, lakes, lagoons, volcanoes and cloud forests all within striking distance of the city.
Activities include horseback riding, mountain climbing, trekking, canopy, rappelling, and rafting.
The other big winner of the night -- known as the Oscars of the travel industry -- was Lima, Peru, which took the title of South America’s Leading Culinary Destination and South America’s Leading Tourist Board.
The JW Marriott Hotel Lima also took the prize for South America’s Leading Hotel.
Awards are voted on by travel agents around the world.

hair fall!

Bye-bye hair fall!

hair Tired of seeing the drain clogged with your hair? Or strands of hair on your pillow when you wake up? On an average, we lose 100 strands of hair a day. Hair growth follows a pattern—the growth phase (anagen), the transition phase (catagen) and shedding phase (telogen). During anagen, the hair fibres are anchored to the hair follicle, but this is not the case during telogen and it is in this phase that the hair tends to fall. According to Delhi-based dermatologist, Dr Vandana Chatrath, “About 10 per cent of your hair is in the shedding phase at a time, so it is normal to lose between 50 to 100 strands a day. Anymore than that could be a cause of concern.”

Don’t lose hair
Dr Chatrath lists the major causes of hair fall as stress, improper diet, seasonal changes, hormone changes, deficiencies like low iron levels, surgeries, illnesses, pregnancy and certain medications. Here are a few tips to contain hair fall.

1 Eat smart:
Hair is made up of protein, so it is important to increase your intake of meat, fish, pulses, eggs, vegetables and fruits. Avoid crash-diets. Adequate sleep and water is a must.

2 Take time out:
Excessive stress is conclusively known to slow down hair growth and cause hair loss. The body reacts to stress by producing more free radicals that cause damage and, in some cases, hair falls out. Meditation and breathing exercises should help.

3 Stop hair abuse:
Harsh chemical treatments like perming, colouring and straightening also result in hair fall. Cut down the use of blow-dryers, tongs and styling products, as these can dry out the scalp and cause flakes.

4 Hair care products:
Seasonal changes also cause hair fall. Excessive exposure to the sun, pollution, rain and dust without proper protection makes the hair dry, brittle and limp. Use a leave-in conditioner during the rains to protect it from the humidity and wash and oil your hair regularly to maintain a healthy scalp. Stick to one good mild cleansing shampoo and conditioner for at least six months before changing.

Massaging your scalp stimulates circulation and keeps hair follicles active. Hair serum forms a thin protective layer and returns the moisture lost due to environmental factors and heat-induced styling.
