Vitamin A and Iron Rich Recipe: Carrots and Dates Relish

A sweet and sour recipe, carrot and dates relish (Kachumber) is healthy, delicious and nutritious. It is also easy to prepare.
Ingredients:

  • 1 big carrot
  • 8 dates
  • 15 raisins
  • 8 almonds
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon lemon juice (to taste)
  • Sugar to taste
  • Salt to taste

Method:

Wash and peel the carrot. Then grate it.

Chop the dates finely into small pieces.

Soak the almonds in water for about half an hour. And peel and slice them.
Add the chopped dates, sliced almonds, raisins, salt, sugar, black pepper powder to the grated carrots and mix well.

You can serve it as it is or chilled.

Variation:

You can add soaked and boiled peanuts too.
You can also use fresh grapes, finely chopped instead of raisins.
You can also use freshly squeezed sweet oranges to marinate it, instead of lemon juice.

How to Take Care of Frizzy Hair

Hair is porous, so your cuticles suck up every bit of moisture they get. During the hot months, when humidity hits the roof, cuticles absorb moisture and expand. This causes hair to frizz up. The scorching summer sun combined with heat styling procedures like blow-drying or straightening can result in frayed and brittle ends.  An easy way to tame your mane is by using a hydrating, nourishing shampoo and conditioner. Refrain from excessive styling with blow-dryers, curling irons or flat-irons, as too much heat damages the cuticle and leads to more frizz. Dr Aparna Santhanam, consulting dermatologist, Hindustan Unilever, says, “It’s important to use hats, scarves or umbrellas each time you step out to protect your hair from damage. Tie long hair back gently while travelling to minimise breakage.”
SHOW SOME LOVE
Hair-care or pampering needn’t always be an expensive salon affair. Dr Santhanam lists out a few tricks to help turn your grooming routine into a full-blown pampering session:
Hot oil massage: Dr Santhanam suggests beginning your home hair spa with a deep oil massage to the scalp and hair, using oil enriched with different herbs and natural ingredients. “Warm a little coconut oil slightly and add a few curry leaves, hibiscus and jasmine flowers. Decant it and massage deeply for about 20 minutes,” she says.
Deep-conditioning hair pack: Step two is a heavy-duty conditioning mask. You can either go for readily available protein/wax hair masks, or whip up a natural pack with a mix of egg whites and natural products like hibiscus and aloe vera.
Get the hot towel: After the pack has worked its magic on your hair for 20 minutes, wrap your hair with a steamed hot towel. This will make sure that your hair and scalp absorb all the proteins and nutrients from the pack.
Wash up: Rinse with a deep cleansing clarifying shampoo and conditioner.
Post-wash conditioning: The final step involves applying a serum or leave-in conditioner for shine. It’s best to let the hair dry naturally. If you’re stepping out, blow-dry to a sleek, desired finish.

Tips: Best Home Remedies for Healthy Hair

Hair Tips: Best Home Remedies for Healthy Hair

Good hair is something everybody wishes they had. However, it is the quality of the hair, the bounce, hair thickness and manageability that wins over the length of the hair or hair growth. Celebrity hairstylist, Asgar shares with us hair treatment secrets for healthy beautiful hair.

Olive Oil
Try applying a small amount of olive oil to the ends of the hair to provide moisture to hair, as it is regularly exposed to heat and sun.  Avoid the scalp as humidity causes the scalp to get naturally oily anyway.  Do this weekly especially if you have dryer, coarser hair.

Honey
Honey is a kitchen cupboard staple and a natural ingredient, which is often found in shop bought hair-care treatments. The natural moisturising properties of honey draw in the moisture and will instantly seal into the dry hair, caused by too much sun. Try soothing in small amounts of honey to the ends of your hair and leave it for an hour or so before rinsing it off thoroughly. Not only will it provide a pleasant fragrance, but it will give your hair with moisture and shine.

Egg
Although it sounds odd, washing your hair with egg yolks one or twice a week can provide it with protein and fat. The protein and fat can effectively minimise the effect that the sun, sea, chlorine and humidity have on limp, dry locks.  Make sure your hair is damp when you do this and carefully rub one egg yolk into the scalp. Leave this for approximately 20 minutes and then rinse it out thoroughly for that extra strong hair boost.

Eat Right
It may seem like the most simple of home remedies but it really can be the most effective.  What one eats is a huge factor in the state of one’s hair condition.  During the summer months, when the weather is hot and humid, make sure to load up on fish, nuts, spinach and Greek-yogurt, which contain nutrients that will keep your hair thick and healthy.

Natural Remedies to Prevent Split Ends

Natural Remedies to Prevent Split Ends
Harsh hair products and lack of moisture can cause split ends

  •
Split ends are a common problem that can occur in either long or short hair, be it dry, oily or normal. Hair tends to spilt when the hair shaft loses its natural moisture. The ends mostly split due to dryness, over exposure in the sun, frequent use of intensive hair care products like hair sprays, hair gels or hair colour. Lack of proper diet also tends to cause dryness in hair which might result in split ends.

No matter how well you take care of your hair, some breakage and split ends are bound to happen. Trimming the split ends is not the only solution for getting rid of them. Listed below are some natural remedies and medicated ways to prevent split ends from occurring:

  1. Mix a small amount of castor oil/ olive oil / almond oil into the oil you regularly use. If you wish to add all three of them you could do that as well. Make sure you oil the ends of you hair strands as well. This mixture not only helps your hair grow but it prevents your hair ends from discoloring. Massage your hair & scalp with warm oil and wrap your head with a shower cap and leave overnight or for 8-10 hours if you have time. Rinse well in the morning with a mild shampoo. Use this mixture to oil your hair atleast twice a week.
  2. Alternatively, take half cup of oil in half cup of boiling water in a bottle and close it tightly. Shake vigorously. Massage this mixture thoroughly on your hair from root to tip and cover with shower cap. Leave it on for half hour, then wash. Be careful with your hands and head as the water is supposed to be hot.
  3. Prepare a hair mask by adding a tablespoon of yoghurt in a mixture of 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 tablespoon honey. Massage on your hair thoroughly and then wrap your head with shower cap for half an hour. Wash using a mild shampoo.
  4. A papaya pack is a great natural care for split ends. Take 2 big slices of ripe papaya. Remove the skin and the seeds of the papaya and blend it in a blender. Add to it half a cup of yogurt and apply thoroughly to your scalp and hair. Wash after 30 minutes with warm water. If you don’t have papaya you can used a ripe banana instead.
  5. Grind 1tablespoon of methi (fenugreek) seeds with half a cup of urad daal to a coarse powder. Add half a cup of yogurt and mix well. Apply generously all over the scalp and hair. Wash after 2-3 hours with warm water.
  6. Take 4 cups warm water and add 1 tablespoon of honey into it and mix well. After your regular shampoo and conditioning, apply this mixture all through your hair. Do not rinse again. This mixture not only makes your hair soft and gives a shine to them; it also retains the moisture content in your hair so that your hair does not look dry or frizzy. This is a home-made remedy that acts as a serum/conditioner for your hair.
  7. Another home treatment for hair especially to counter split ends is a simple home-made shampoo . For this treatment, all you need is an ounce of rosemary, preferably fresh, a pint of hot water, and one tablespoon of yoghurt.  What you need to do is steep your rosemary in the hot water for about 20 minutes, then let it cool. Once it's cooled down, add a tablespoon of yoghurt into it and massage the mix into your hair and rinse, just as you would with a regular shampoo.
  8. Mash an avocado and after getting your hair a bit damp, massage the fruit into your hair. Make sure you get your split ends coated. Let it set for anywhere between 15 minutes and half an hour, then rinse it out. You can add a tablespoon of olive oil for some extra sheen, if you like.
