Acne Myths & Acne Facts

Acne Myths & Acne Facts (Part II)
So now that you know that eating chocolate won’t give you pimples, how about finding out practical and useful ways of dealing with acne? Misinformation about acne often makes the problem worse. It is best to find out everything you can, before you embark on an acne management program. Yes, acne management is a long program. You cannot just make it go away in a week or two weeks!
Here are a few tips that can help you avoid or deal with acne problems:
Drink a good amount of water every day. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, you should drink water at least eight times a day. In fact, the “thirst” you experience is a way of your body to tell you that it is water-deprived. Should you wait till then? Water cleanses the body of toxins and impurities. That is one way in which it helps in dealing with acne. Also, when the body is water-deprived it tries to retain water. Water retention puts pressure on the skin, thereby making the pores bigger. And this is one big invitation to dust and grime to settle in and form a pimple!
Avoid whatever you think aggravates the problem. While it has been proved that oily food or sugar doesn’t cause acne, some people associate certain foods with acne. Whatever you think triggers the acne in your case should be avoided completely.
Avoid harsh soaps and chemicals. Harsh chemicals tend to irritate the skin and cause breakouts. Unless you are exposed to coal, dust and grease, you don’t need a soap at all. Just wash your face with cold water at least twice a day.
Eat a well balanced and wholesome diet. This means that you consume a good amount of whole grain foods, fresh fruit, vegetables and salads every day. These food stuffs provide the body with dietary fiber, which in turn helps digestion. Good digestion is important in acne management as well.
Never pick on the pimples. Your need to get rid of the pimple IMMEDIATELY is understandable. But picking on these pimples will give you a face full of scars and deep pits. So after you finish with acne management program, you will have to start a scar treatment program! Pimple picking also tends to spread and aggravate the acne.
Avoid rubbing your face with towels etc. Towels and loofas tend to spread the infection all over your face and body by carrying the germs. So whenever you wash your face, just pat it dry.
Reduce stress in your life. Stress does not cause acne, but it is known to aggravate the problem by causing a hormonal imbalance. To beat the stress, you might want to consider an exercise/dance or aerobics program. Beat the stress, deal with acne, look good – 3 benefits in one go!
Never go to bed with your make up on. while wearing make up is not known to cause acne, sleeping with make up can certainly aggravate the problem. Adopt a nightly regimen of skin care that includes cleansing, toning and moisturizing.
Get medical help. If the problem is acute, visit a dermatologist. Antibiotics are known to be used in acne management. But medicines take at least 2-3 months to take effect, so do not leave the treatment midway after a week or two.
Acne management is mostly about common sense. The basic principle is that face should be clean, skin should not be irritated and infection should not be allowed to spread. Simple, isn’t it?
