We were all taught the same thing growing up: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But that maxim referred to a healthy, nutritious breakfast, surely. The very parents and teachers who urged us to eat breakfast consistently would be horrified at the thought that we exercised that consistency by devouring a slice of rich, decadent chocolate cake.
However, nutritionists say that adding a slice a chocolate cake to the morning’s bacon and eggs can actually help you lose weight!Morning is the best time of the day to indulge in sweets because your metabolism is working at its fastest and you have the rest of your day to burn off the calories.
Research has also shown that eating chocolate with a meal high in protein and carbohydrates (like a typical hot breakfast) normally means you’re less likely to crave cocoa throughout the day.
Reduced cravings means reduced indulgence, which means a better shot at achieving your goal.
And let’s not forget the natural health benefits of chocolate. It’s not all bad! Only about a third of the fats in chocolate contribute toward raising cholesterol and the chance of heart disease.
Another third are fats that have no affect on cholesterol whatsoever and the final third of the fat isn’t even saturated.
Chocolate is a tasty source of the body’s natural defense system: anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants help the body fight diseases and preserve the skin, preventing wrinkles and age spots!
If you’d like to add more anti-oxidants to your diet, try eating more foods such as tomatoes, strawberries, nuts, seeds, or eggs. Or chocolate, of course. Even for breakfast.
To make your cake-and-bacon combo a little bit healthier you could make a few alterations such as swapping milk chocolate for dark chocolate, which contains even more anti-oxidants, or having fish instead of the usual breakfast meats.
Fish is a much healthier choice, containing many healthy oils that the body needs, and it can also add a bit of variety to your diet.
So you can have your cake and eat it too, especially at breakfast!
